Documentary takes a behind the scenes look at AQRIFood

PLANT-BASED FOOD

A new documentary by Danish TV2 focuses on plant-based foods that are more sustainable and will be able to nourish the growing global population in the future.

The ten different varieties each of oat, peas and faba beans growing in Sejet are all potential candidates as future raw ingredients in plant-based foods.

The documentary ‘Spis grønt for fremtiden’ (Eat green for the future) goes behind the scenes of the AQRIFood project, part of the Innovation Fund Denmark's Innomission Programme 2022.  Episode 2 is entirely about the project that will make more people choose plant-based diets by creating better ingredients for plant-based food.

“We have to start eating more plants, because the climate simply can’t keep up with the current large-scale production and consumption of meat,” said Christian Bugge Henriksen, who is the AQRIFood coordinator and an associate professor at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences.

“In fact, 20 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions come from animal food production. It’s much more efficient to produce plants that humans can eat, than to produce plants for animals so that we can eat them afterwards.”

The documentary also pays a visit to the idyllic countryside in Sejet outside Horsens, where plant breeders carry out the vital work of growing and harvesting the specific crops for the AQRIFood project.

The documentary will air on TV2 in the Copenhagen region this Sunday 4 September, but you can already watch it online here.
