I am an environmental soil physicist with a strong background on numerical modelling of water flow, solute transport and heat flow in the unsaturated zone. My scientific curiosity is focused on the understanding and the analysis between the discrepancy of theory predictions and actual observations in the vadose zone. This includes combining theory and observations for different problems, spanning through a variety of spatial scales, i.e. from the pore scale to the regional scale and of different time scales, i.e. hours to decades. To achieve this, I am combining:
- advanced modelling and experimental techniques for characterising SHPs at the representative elementary volume (REV)
- advanced numerical models simulating water flow, solute transport and heat flow in porous media including non-equilibrium water flow (preferential flow)
- and state of the art inverse modelling methods. Moreover, I am using advanced techniques for the quantification of parameter and model prediction uncertainty. This includes classic and Bayesian methods.
