I am a bachelor student from the Netherlands who is interested in learning about the natural world around us. I study green biotechnology at InHolland Amsterdam, and I am interested in working on problems that may help solve current and future food shortages.
The goal of this project is to investigate whether the colonization of wheat cultivars by lokisin-producing Pseudomonas strains can provide better protection against Fusarium Culmorum infection. Lokisin is a type of CLP produced by Pseudomonas that possibly has strong antifungal activity. This study aims to create a pseudomonas lokisin knock-out mutant to determine whether the production of lokisin is responsible for the enhanced protection or not. Furthermore, if I have time, I will also make a pseudomonas viscosin knock-out and design bioreporters to be able to more closely study these CLPs in colonized wheat plants.
This research could provide valuable insights into the use of Pseudomonas and CLPs as biopesticides for crop protection and help address the growing demand for food in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
