Inaugural Lecture and Reception for Professor Paul Neve

Professor Paul Neve became professor of Weed Ecology & Evolution in March 2021. He was previously lead of the Smart Crop Protection strategic programme at Rothamsted Research in the UK.

Paul Neve, professorResearch:
Weedy plants are among the most widely distributed and economically impactful plant species, and they result in global crop yield losses of about 10% per year. Herbicides have come to dominate agricultural weed control, leading to a global epidemic of evolved resistance and calls to develop more sustainable, integrated weed management strategies. My research is working to understand the eco-evolutionary patterns and processes that lead to the adaptation, establishment, spread and persistence of weeds in agroecosystems. Aside from their economic and environmental impacts, weedy plants are also excellent models for addressing basic questions about rapid plant adaptation in the face of human-mediated environmental change. Our group adopts a ‘gene to landscape’ approach using techniques and principles from plant ecology, evolutionary biology, population genetics, epidemiology, and crop science to address basic and applied questions in weed biology and management.

After the lecture, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences will host a reception in the CPSC main hall.
