Inaugural Lecture and Reception for Professor Andreas Blennow
Professor Andreas Blennow became Professor of Starch Biotechnology in December 2020.
Research:
Starch is extraordinarily important in Nature and plants are dependent on their starch reserve for survival. Starch is also the most important dietary energy source for humans and our brain function and development rely on starch-derived glucose. However, too high sugar load from starch consumption can lead to life-style disease. Starch-derived polymers can also be optimised for composite bioplastics. My research is motivated by the tremendous multilevel complexity, challenges and potentials of starch as a raw material for health-promoting and functional foods and new composite materials. Knowledge is collected within fundamental starch biosynthesis and starch multi-level structures and structural dynamics to be translated into application using Next Generation Breeding Technologies like Crispr-Cas technology, post-harvest, clean enzyme-assisted catalysis and novel concepts such as agricultural modification. The research therefore supports our efforts to combat life-style disease and support plant-based food for a growing population as well as solving environmental plastics pollution.
After the lecture, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences will host a reception in the CPSC Hall (main entrance via Bülowsvej 21).
