Sander Bruun appointed Professor of Sustainable Soil Fertility Management

APPOINTMENT

Sander Bruun will give his inaugural lecture as new professor at the Department of Plant & Environmental Sciences Friday 22 March at 14:00. His research investigates technologies and management practices that can make agriculture more climate-friendly, and make the way we use the soils of the planet more sustainable.

Sander Bruun
Professor Sander Bruun will be the head of the research group Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Soil Management.

The appointment of a full professor is a timely boost to a research area that is essential to transform our food production systems in a more sustainable direction.

“Climate change is the biggest environmental threat we face, and proper soil and nutrient management can play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emission from agricultural soils,” Sander Bruun said.

“We need to work with soil management strategies and develop mitigation technologies that allow us to maintain productivity, while reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and other environmental emissions.”

Collaboration is essential

Looking forward to the challenge, he said that the necessary transformation must be a collaborative effort.

“It is a major challenge to develop the right combination of soil management strategies and mitigation technologies that will drive the change. I am really looking forward to contributing to this together with all my colleagues in the research group and the department as well as a wealth of other institutions. This collaboration is absolutely essential in order to achieve the major changes of our agricultural production systems.”

Sander Bruun graduated in Biology at the University of Copenhagen, before beginning his scientific career as a PhD student in Soil Science at the former Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University. He continued after the university merged with the University of Copenhagen, and he has been an Associate Professor at PLEN since 2009.

He is the head of the Soil Fertility research group. The group will split into two groups this year, and he will then lead the new research group called Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Soil Management.

Professor Sander Bruun will give his inaugural lecture 22. March 2024 14:00 in the historic auditorium A1-1.01 at the Faculty of Science, Bülowsvej 17, Frederiksberg.
