I study the cyclic methionine chain elongation – the first step in biosynthesis of aliphatic glucosinolates. The iterative chain elongation pathway produces a range of precursor molecules important for the chemical diversity of glucosinolates. The methionine derivative can leave the chain elongation at several stages. My project studies how enzyme structure and protein microenvironment play together in deciding whether a methionine derivative will leave the chain elongation or continue for one more elongation cycle. The project is carried out in collaboration with associate professor Jing-Ke Weng from Whitehead Institute, MIT.
