The overarching theme for my research is related to obtaining better understanding of fractionation and enzymatic deconstruction of plant materials with the purpose of developing more efficient and sustainable biorefining applications.

Specifically my research involves:

  • Fractionation of biomass for production of protein, sugars, lignin etc
  • Novel recovery of proteins from process streams
  • Enzymatic processes for fractionation, modification and deconstruction of plant cell wall materials
  • Biomass characterisation
  • Biomass pretreatment, e.g. hydrothermal pretreatment

My research has resulted in fundamental new knowledge on how the plant cell wall is affected by hydrothermal pretreatment and how this can be explored to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis in biorefinery applications. The pioneering research on high solids enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation and factors behind the “solids effect” has resulted in a new concept for industrial processing of lignocellulosic materials, which is now recognized as state of the art within the area. The research has involved successful collaboration with industrial partners on developing ground-breaking technology protected by IPR.
