More than honey: potential of drone brood in western diets
Honey bees have been kept by man for ages and all people know the sweet taste of honey. We also use the bee wax and in some European countries even the pollen are used for consumption. The bee brood (larvae and pupae) are consumed in Asian countries but it is not yet a part of western diet, even bee brood is very rich in proteins.
In Denmark many beekeepers remove the drone brood, which is then simply discharged.
Studies on the size, availability and processing of this resource are needed. Also needed are innovative ideas how to increase the production of drones without a trade off on the pollination capacity of honey bees.
